celebrating black families

Honoring the stories of black families with utmost respect and care.

The Black Family Voice Project

The Black Family Voice Project is a two year community based participatory research project where we ask questions to Black Families in King County about how they are preparing their babies for kindergarten. Developed by Soar and the King County Early Learning Coalition, our goal is to close the achievement gaps that persist for Black children in King County. Our intention for this project is to learn about Black families’ experiences in King County, build relationships with the community, and set the stage for supporting community-led advocacy. We also wanted to elevate their stories and share them with permission to decision makers in education and legislative systems.

Our Goals:

Increase the power of family voice to shape local, regional, and state level policy.

Support a foundation of authentic family engagement at the community level.

Engage and support parents and caregivers as lifelong advocates for their children.

Connect with Black families in King County and hear their narratives about school readiness.

Create opportunities for connection and advocacy for Black families.

Share their stories honorably in form of a report and short film documenting the process.

our Framework

The Black Family Voice Project is focused on creating respectful and reciprocal relationships with Black community members.  Therefore, we intentionally selected Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) as our process for our project. CBPR is a process that engages those who are most affected by a community issue to conduct research on and analyze an issue, with the goal of devising strategies to resolve it. It presumes the existence of knowledge and wisdom within families and communities.  It is important to pose strength-based questions, listen and collect stories and identify common themes.
